I was appointed as heritage consultant for The Weavers Arms, a Grade II listed public house in central Norwich, after unapproved repair works had taken place. My role was to assess the impact of those changes, including roof and masonry alterations, and prepare a report to support a retrospective Listed Building Consent application.

The project required navigating the line between preservation and practicality: recognising the loss of some historic material while demonstrating the public benefit of securing the building’s long-term stability. The outcome reflected a principled, evidence-led approach that balanced conservation integrity with clear, constructive advocacy for the client.

Through careful documentation, measured reasoning, and open dialogue with the local authority, the case was successfully approved. The process reinforced the importance of pragmatic, transparent heritage advice, helping to safeguard the building’s future while maintaining trust between client, consultant, and conservation officer.
